Gaz wins Stop Cafe Big Air Bag Competition

Tomas Hajek and Gareth Nicholls, our heads of skiing and snowboarding respectively took part in a big air freestyle contest in Witow Ski Area near Zakopane last Wednesday and Thursday (24th - 25th February). The competition took place at the bottom of the slope where people could watch freestylers from around Poland from the restaurant balcony and from the ski lift overhead. With a big jump and a huge air bag to land on competitors could push themselves to try new things. Tom took the opportunity to launch himself upside down and inside out, landing a clean Misty 720 and almost pulling off a double back flip. On Wednesday Gaz finished 2nd in the big air contest before stepping it up on Thursday to take 1st place, winning himself £300 worth of prizes over the two days after landing tricks including a Misty 540 and a huge backside Rodeo.

The North Face Polish Freeskiing Open 2010

Over the last weekend 29th - 30th January, the North Face Polish freeskiing open took place at Harenda ski area in Zakopane. Competitors from all over Europe were on show in both a Big Air and Rail competition. British skiers Joseph Tomlinson who finished 5th in the Big Air and James Lawson who finished 6th in the Rail session were putting down some smooth tricks, including Joseph’s switch 1080 over the huge jump.

However, the undoubted highlight was watching 8 year old Estonian girl Kelly Sildaru (http://www.kellysildaru.com) throwing smooth 720’s in the ladies competition, she ended up coming 2nd place behind Zuzana Stromkova of Slovakiadue to the lack of grab in her spins but no doubt a future star - most 8 year old girls are home playing with their toys!

FIS World Cup Ski Jumping in Zakopane

Today is the first day of the 2010 FIS World Cup Ski Jumping event here in Zakopane - if you have Eurosport then you can find it live on there over the weekend where you will be sure to catch a glimpse of a few spots around the town.

Thousands of people are in Zakopane for the event with Polish hero Adam Malyszthe main attraction. A 5 time Ski Jumping World Champion, Adam is considered one of the best and most successful ski jumpers of all time. His fans flock to Zakopane and the town lights up for 3 days with a carnival type atmosphere. Whether he wins or not people will party day and night in their Polish hats, flags, scarves and blow their REALLY ANNOYING HORNS!!!

Today is solely practice runs before tomorrow’s qualifiers and Saturdays main event, the final. The weather in Zakopane is currently cold with no wind so there should be no use for the optional ”bad weather” day on Sunday.

Malysz is not expected to win this year (although these things do happen) as he is getting on in the world of ski jumping now, having begun his career in 1995 but still thousands of people are in town hanging on to the hope that he can win for one last time here in Poland, we’ll let you know!

Skiing Off Piste In Poland

For those of you who have been on holiday in Poland as more advanced skiers and snowboarders you will share our irritation at the National Park Patrols who strictly deny you the fun of skiing off piste on Kasprowy Wierch. At the end of last winter, 2008/2009, they opened up a fenced off run down an “off piste area” on Kasprowy Wierch in a bid to give people what they want. However, just because a run is ungroomed doesn’t make it automatically off piste and especially since they fenced the run off it pretty much became simply a new regular run.

The potentially exciting news is that there are big talks and debates going on at the moment between the fun loving skiers and snowboarders among us and the National Park people with the thoughts of allowing off piste skiing on Kasprowy Wierch. This would be a massive step for Zakopane and skiing in Poland and would certainly save a few powder hungry skiers a lot of fines!
