FIRST SNOWFALL IN ZAKOPANE!
Posted on October 13, 2009
Zakopane has seen its first snowfall of 2009 on October 13th! Around 25cm of fresh snow fell in the town yesterday with an estimated 40cm falling in the mountains on the top of Kasprowy Wierch ski area. Those were the numbers released last night on the news at 6pm and since then it has not stopped in the last 24 hours. The forecast is for nothing but snow over the next four days and the snow shovels are officially out in Zakopane.
The snow has come early and the trees in Zakopane have suffered. With so much snow falling onto the still green leaves, a lot of branches and even whole trees have come crashing down under the weight of the snow. Here are a few photos of the snow this morning in Zakopane, if this inspires you to get ready for a ski holiday to Poland then take a look at some of our ski and snowboard packagesavailable here in Zakopane.
New Bars in Zakopane
Posted on October 30, 2009
Winter 2009/2010 in Zakopane will not only provide you with the opportunity to ski in one of the best value for money resorts in Europe but also to enjoy a fantastic place to party. The best value ski and snowboard holidays in Europejust got a little more exciting with the opening of two new bars in Zakopane along the most popular pedestrianised street in Poland, the Krupowki. The Seven Mountains Bar and the B&W Lounge are two very welcome additions to Zakopane. They can be found mid way along the Krupowki, and provide an extra stop on the route to one of the nine nightclubs that can be found at the top and bottom ends of the Krupowki. The Seven Mountains Bar is located within a small wooden building providing a more local, traditional atmosphere and has two seating areas upstairs and downstairs around large wooden tables, it is a great place to sit and enjoy a drink after a day skiing. The B&W lounge offers a more modern alternative and acts as a great place to either start or finish your night out. The downstairs has a bar, black and white leather seats and plays a mixture of chilled out music. The upstairs in the B&W Lounge is decorated stylishly all in black with leather seats, tables and chilled out music providing a relaxing atmosphere. Both new bars offer reasonable prices; a pint of beer costing around 7 Zloty (£1.50) and a double Vodka around 10 Zloty (£2.20) and whilst both bars serve a variety of drinks the B&W Lounge also offers a cocktail menu.

Posted on December 9, 2009
When the snow has melted and you’re looking for your next fix of board sports then why not check out the beautiful country that is South Africa and head to Cape Town for a professionally organised surfing, kiteboarding and diving holiday?
Liquid Sessions is a new company set up by a good friend of ours at White Side Holidays who lives in Cape Town, South Africa (pictured below on his snowboard here in Zakopane and his surf board out in Cape Town).
“South Africa has around 3000 kilometers of coastline with sunshine throughout most of the year making it a fantastic destination for divers, surfers and kiteboarders. We offer family friendly activity holidays in and around Cape Town, which has a warm Mediterranean climate and is scattered with beautiful landscapes and history.”
With the football World Cup taking place in South Africa next summer as well what better way to spend a holiday. Enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, stay in one of Liquid Sessions fantastic accommodation options and take in the carnival that will be the World Cup in South Africa as well!
Skiing Off Piste In Poland
Posted on January 6, 2010
For those of you who have been on holiday in Poland as more advanced skiers and snowboarders you will share our irritation at the National Park Patrols who strictly deny you the fun of skiing off piste on Kasprowy Wierch. At the end of last winter, 2008/2009, they opened up a fenced off run down an “off piste area” on Kasprowy Wierch in a bid to give people what they want. However, just because a run is ungroomed doesn’t make it automatically off piste and especially since they fenced the run off it pretty much became simply a new regular run.
The potentially exciting news is that there are big talks and debates going on at the moment between the fun loving skiers and snowboarders among us and the National Park people with the thoughts of allowing off piste skiing on Kasprowy Wierch. This would be a massive step for Zakopane and skiing in Poland and would certainly save a few powder hungry skiers a lot of fines!
If you’re on Facebook then please help the cause and join the group Wolny Kasprowy – aimed at gathering numbers for the powder hungry skiers and snowboarders amongst us to put to the National Park people here in Poland.
We will keep you posted…
FIS World Cup Ski Jumping in Zakopane
Posted on January 21, 2010
Today is the first day of the 2010 FIS World Cup Ski Jumping event here in Zakopane – if you have Eurosport then you can find it live on there over the weekend where you will be sure to catch a glimpse of a few spots around the town.
Thousands of people are in Zakopane for the event with Polish hero Adam Malyszthe main attraction. A 5 time Ski Jumping World Champion, Adam is considered one of the best and most successful ski jumpers of all time. His fans flock to Zakopane and the town lights up for 3 days with a carnival type atmosphere. Whether he wins or not people will party day and night in their Polish hats, flags, scarves and blow their REALLY ANNOYING HORNS!!!
Today is solely practice runs before tomorrow’s qualifiers and Saturdays main event, the final. The weather in Zakopane is currently cold with no wind so there should be no use for the optional ”bad weather” day on Sunday.
If you are at all interested in ski jumping then you can follow events in Zakopane on the official FIS website here. Malysz is not expected to win this year (although these things do happen) as he is getting on in the world of ski jumping now, having begun his career in 1995 but still thousands of people are in town hanging on to the hope that he can win for one last time here in Poland, we’ll let you know!
The North Face Polish Freeskiing Open 2010
Posted on February 4, 2010
Over the last weekend 29th – 30th January, the North Face Polish freeskiing open took place at Harenda ski area in Zakopane. Competitors from all over Europe were on show in both a Big Air and Rail competition. British skiers Joseph Tomlinson who finished 5th in the Big Air and James Lawson who finished 6th in the Rail session were putting down some smooth tricks, including Joseph’s switch 1080 over the huge jump.
However, the undoubted highlight was watching 8 year old Estonian girl Kelly Sildaru (http://www.kellysildaru.com) throwing smooth 720’s in the ladies competition, she ended up coming 2nd place behind Zuzana Stromkova of Slovakiadue to the lack of grab in her spins but no doubt a future star – most 8 year old girls are home playing with their toys!
Big Air Finals – MEN
